11/8/11 CHISPAS was invited to attend the 2011 Campus Progress Progressive Summit this year in DC. Three of our members got the chance to learn more about organizing a campaign in order to "spark" change at the UF campus. CHISPAS will be launching a campaign next semester. Be part of the movement. Be a spark!10/02/11 CHISPAS raised $300 toward a scholarship designated for low-income students, including students who are constrained due to immigration status. We hope to launch the scholarship next semester! The money was raised during a baking fundraiser in Downtown Latino. 09/18/11 Our new cabinet members have been chosen! Congratulations Victor, Patricia, Anna, Nichole, Rebecca, Diego and Chris. 08/07/11CHISPAS cabinet applications are out and we have the following positions available: PR Assistant Director, Membership Director, Assistant External Director, Fundraising Director and Historian. You can access the applications under the documents tab (eighth circle). Applications will be due at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10.

WHO WE ARECHISPAS is a youth-led organization at the University of Florida comprised of students and community members who are truly invested in the immigrant community and feel passionate about "sparking" change.We aim to work on specific issues such as undocumented youth in the U.S. and the DREAM Act, farmworker justice and fair food, human rights for all, fair and comprehensive immigration reform and building productive and politically conscious citizens.
About Us OUR HISTORYCHISPAS was founded in May 2008 by Grey Torrico. Upon graduating from high school, Grey, and her sister, Rommy, used their own experiences as immigrants to embark on a mission to create an organization that reflected the need to serve the immigrant community. The dream was to help brothers and sisters who were also in a fight for justice. From this passion came the founding of CHISPAS, the only service organization that specifically serves immigrants in the UF community and addresses the issues they face. In its first semester, CHISPAS succeeded in planning events such as a program hosting the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW), a rally against Chipotle and a toy drive which benefitted three migrant families. In addition, CHISPAS members participated in local migrant fairs, regional and national conferences, as well as youth activism across the state. In the spring semester of 2009, CHISPAS successfully launched a campaign urging the passage of the DREAM Act and pioneered a resolution in the Student Government Senate to support this legislation. CHISPAS launched its notorious Project Progress, our ESL classes, where UF student volunteers tutored non-English speaking members of the community. We also hosted an alternative spring break trip to Immokalee, Fla., where we participated in various service projects in the area. To date, we have collaborated with various cultural organizations on campus as well as community and statewide organizations on various campaigns and programs. We focus now on all aspects that affect immigration such as the economy and immigrant rights.

VITALITY- The vitality of the bull is its source of energy and survival. Our vitality is made up of our passion for the immgrant community, and it will fuel our message for years to come. PASSION- Symbolized by the blue flames, we know that our passion and belief in our cause will lead us towards justice. Our passion is the "spark" that gives CHISPAS not only its name, but its meaning. LIFE- With the creation of fire, human beings were given opportunities for their futures. It changed the course of history forever. So too, will CHISPAS.

The Florida Immigrant Coalition (FLIC) will be hosting its 6th Annual Congress at the University of Florida in Gainesville from Friday to Sunday.

About 250 Floridians are expected to rally together and celebrate immigrant advocacy as well as prepare for the challenges coming up for the 2012 legislative session.

CHISPAS will be helping transport people around the city and make sure their time here is as productive as possible. We are very excited to showcase North Florida in this event and show the state what we can and will do!

Activities IMMERSION TRIPSThese tips are taken by CHISPAS members to locations around Florida that give first-hand experience and insight into the realities of immigrant injustices of farmworker difficulties.We hope to have this program be one of the culminations of our efforts in helping out the migrant population. Annual trips can be arranged during the spring and summer breaks. Harvest time dictates when travel would occur.Volunteers will be asked to coordinate community outreach events for the collection of toiletries and clothing the semester prior to the trip. Donation items will be taken as gifts to workers at the given location.

PROJECT PROGRESSProject Progress is CHISPAS' ongoing community-focused and service-oriented English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. These classes are free of charge and are offered to interested non-English speaking community members of Gainesville in order to better their language and communication skills. Volunteers usually work with small groups (approx. 1-4 students) and have the freedom to develop materials and activities to suit their style and students. AWARENESSCHISPAS strives to create awareness about four main issues affecting the immigrant population in the U.S. by organizing forums, film screenings, petition signings, etc. These issues are the DREAM Act, separation of families, farmworker rights and comprehensive immigration.

Project Progress, our literacy and English as a second language (ESL) education classes, is one of the primary targets of this organization.
