Trail of DREAMs

What is the Trail of DREAMs?

Despite the recent announcement of the Comprehensive Immigration Reform for America's Security and Prosperity Act of 2009 (CIR ASAP) by Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL), Florida's immigrant communities and allies feel that neither Congress, nor the Obama Administration is doing enough to ease the suffering of immigrant communities. In fact, there has been an increase in the raids, deportations, and separation of families that outraged immigrant communities during the previous
administration.

WE FEEL THAT CONGRESS AND THE PRESIDENT MUST ACT IMMEDIATELY TO KEEP OUR FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES TOGETHER.

THE TRAIL OF DREAMS AND FAST FOR OUR FAMILIES DEMONSTRATE OUR WILLINGNESS TO MAKE SERIOUS SACRIFICES, RISKING OUR FUTURE, BECAUSE OUR PRESENT--LIVING IN THE SHADOWS IN A STATE OF OPPRESSION AND EXPLOITATION--IS UNBEARABLE.

For this, on January 1, 2010, four brave, determined students from Miami will embark on a 2,000-mile journey across the southeast, all the way to our nation's Capitol. The walkers, who will be joined by supporters from throughout Florida and other states along the way, expect to arrive in our nation’s capital on May 1st, cheered on by supporters from throughout the country, until their demands are met.

Why a Walk?

Each walker is deeply committed to making the personal sacrifice required to demonstrate their desire—and need—for complete citizenship. They are going the extra mile, armed with the spirit of righteousness and the passion for justice and freedom that was shown in the Civil Rights movement. Through their commitment to denouncing our broken immigration system and lack of access to higher education, the walkers will continue to stand up for the DREAM of a country where all have the opportunity to fulfill their talents and ambitions, and live their lives free from fear, exploitation and oppression in the country that they have adopted as their home. Because of the urgent need for just and humane reform, they are willing to risk it all as they walk across the southern states on their path to Washington to demand real change.
